The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), once a spearhead in the fight against pollution, seems to be stepping back recently. The strong and proactive stance it took under President Biden appears to be shifting under the Trump administration. This change in direction is causing some uncertainty regarding the future of long-standing pollution investigations.

From Tough Approach to Leniency:

During Biden's era, the EPA took an unyielding approach towards environmental enforcement, investigating companies for pollution, hazardous waste, and other violations. Various sites, such as a refinery in New Mexico and a chemical plant in Louisiana, fell under the EPA’s strict scrutiny. However, under Trump's administration, the EPA has expressed its intention to pivot its focus, aiming to lower the costs associated with buying a car, heating homes, or running a business.

New Decisions in Public Health and Energy Production:

Fast forward to today, and a new EPA memo is painting a clearer picture of the future. Essentially, the memo says there will be no shutting down of any stage of energy production unless an immediate health threat is looming. Additionally, the memo puts the brakes on proceeding with cutting pollution in poorer areas—a mission initiated under President Biden’s tenure. Lee Zeldin, the EPA administrator, supports these changes, stating that they would enable the agency to channel its energy better towards its core mission and facilitate the Great American Comeback.
