Forever Chemicals Rocking the Boat in Texas:
There's a new update about "forever chemicals" in Texas playing out like a blockbuster. The quiet county of Johnson, located south of Fort Worth, recently found itself in a bit of a pickle, declaring a state of emergency and requesting federal assistance. The reason? Toxic chemicals, known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
Mystery Unfolds in Johnson County:
The drama started way back in 2023, when county investigators discovered dangerously high levels of PFAS (often dubbed 'forever chemicals' due to their longevity in the environment) at two cattle ranches. Now, these aren't your usual chemicals. PFAS pose health risks such as certain types of cancer, birth defects, and developmental delays in children.
The Plot Thickens:
The plot thickens when we find that these PFAS originated from contaminated fertilizer produced from treated sewage from Fort Worth's wastewater treatment plant used on a neighboring farm. This was discovered by a thorough New York Times investigation into the use of this mucky fertilizer.
County Rallies Together:
Bracing themselves against this chemical invasion, the county commissioners passed a resolution, calling for support from Texas Governor Greg Abbott and seeking federal disaster assistance. As Larry Woolley, one of the county’s commissioners, put it, they tread into "uncharted territory". The requested funds would go towards testing and monitoring of drinking water, cleanup, and sadly, the euthanization of contaminated cattle. Let's hope that this tale unfolds positively, with clear actions to protect our environment and health in the end.
