Pollution in Pakistan's Punjab Threatens Kids - UN Says Stop the Smog! [SWOP NEWS]

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has warned that the health of 11 million children in Pakistan's eastern Punjab province is in danger due to toxic smog. This air pollution has become a fifth season in recent years, particularly affecting Lahore and 17 other districts in Punjab. Over 40,000 people have been treated for respiratory ailments.

Health Risks:
The health of 11 million children under the age of 5 is at risk due to air pollution.

Impact on Children:
Prior to this year's record-breaking levels of air pollution, about 12% of deaths in children under 5 in Pakistan were due to air pollution.

Government Measures:
Schools have been closed until November 17 in parts of Punjab to protect children's health.

Environmental Conditions:
Multan remains the most polluted city, with air quality index readings of about 800, which is hazardous to health.

Public Response:
The mandatory wearing of face masks has been widely disregarded.

Government Initiatives:
The government is looking into methods to induce artificial rainfall to combat pollution. The situation is severe, with authorities urging people to avoid unnecessary travel and closing all parks and museums for 10 days. The government must take urgent and greater efforts to reduce air pollution for the affected children and pregnant women.
