Tiny Troublemakers: A Tiny Guide to Understanding Microplastics and Keeping Them Out [SWOP NEWS]

Making Waves With Microplastics:

Reporter Tom Perkins is serving up a blend of wit and wisdom on microplastics with three simple steps to help reduce the plastic invasion in our kitchen.

The King Cake Metaphor:

Perkin’s recent exposure to the socially accepted ingestion of plastic - in the form of a small figurine hidden in the popular Mardi Gras King Cake - seems to resonate as the perfect analogy for our daily dose of microplastics from our favourite foods and cooking utensils.

Prudent Principles:

Perkins brings down the ‘doom and gloom’ on plastics with a healthy heap of pragmatism, reminding us that plastics are omnipresent in our food system, therefore striving for a plastic-free diet might just result in a severe case of 'analysis paralysis'.

Step 1 - You Can't Avoid Them Completely, But You Can Try:

Whilst Perkins admits that it's impossible to completely avoid microplastics, he suggests taking small steps to reduce our exposure - think wooden spoons and stainless steel ladles. If a daily dose of caffeine is non-negotiable, he suggests considering a plastic-free espresso maker.

Step 2 - Apply Heat With Care:

According to Perkins, heat and plastic are a risky combination as it increases microplastic and chemical leaching. Think twice before heating plastic cutlery with hot food and drink and consider making the switch to non-plastic utensils.

Step 3 - Reduce Plastic Exposure Where Possible:

Adopting a pragmatic approach Perkins encourages us to make easy swaps where we can, like trading a plastic blender jar with a glass one, and reassures us that every effort to reduce microplastic exposure counts.
