Wild Night Time Chase: How a Poaching Probe Began:

A strange series of events unfolded in Bridge Lake, B.C, when gunshots in the nighttime led to an attempted citizen's arrest, a wounded deer, and the beginning of a substantial investigation into poaching. The probe has primarily focused on the occupants of a multimillion-dollar home in Richmond.

A Bear, A Porcupine, and the Law:

The unusual circumstances surrounding the attempted arrest led Wildlife officers to the property. The officers discovered, much to their surprise, a porcupine carcass and two bear penises. The items were allegedly part of the unlawful collection of dead wildlife parts. Conservation Officer Joel Kline has spoken out about the prevalence of illegal hunting that frequently occurs in remote areas. Such activities often result in conflicts with local property owners.

Rare Penises and a Black Market:

The fact that bear genitals, specifically penis bones or bacula, were among the items seized is noteworthy. In British Columbia, the separation of these bones from the bear's hide is illegal. The bones feature prominently in traditional Chinese medicine, and a booming black market trade in them has occupied the Canadian authorities for years.

A Chain of Clues:

The investigation was prompted by a report of shots fired and a deer discovered injured in a ditch. While a truck reportedly sped away from the scene, a man was apprehended by locals attempting a citizen's arrest. Witnesses later led officers to two separate blood trails that initially pointed to the likelihood of more casualties, but abruptly ended.

The Long Arm of the Law:

Investigation led the officers to a nearby property, where they obtained a picture of what was believed to be the suspect vehicle. The truck was registered to a businessman living in a Richmond mansion, and conservation officers raided the property a few days later. They confiscated various items, notably two bear penises and the remains of a porcupine. Their findings suggested the property was a site of butchery for various illegally hunted wildlife.

The Consequences:

The officers then carried out a search at the family's mansion, seizing frozen deer meat, electronic devices, and a "skinned-out deer head with skull cap removed." The contents of these devices are now being examined as part of the investigation. To date, no charges have been laid, and all allegations remain to be proven in court.
