This revelation provides plausible explanations for real-life situations. Supermarket shopping, for example, could get tricky because of your inability to focus on your shopping list, leading to more impulse purchases (Perhaps it's not entirely our fault for that over-flowing shopping cart!). Additionally, the study also found that participants performed worse on tests evaluating emotional recognition after being exposed to PM air pollution. This could have repercussions on social interactions and potentially contribute to instances of violent crime, as suggested by some studies.

Does this Mean We’re All Getting Dumber?

Not to worry, it's not all doom and gloom. The study also revealed that some brain functions, such as working memory, aren't affected by short-term pollution exposure, showing that some aspects of our mental machinery are hardy enough to withstand the attack of these micro-sized invaders.

It's no secret that air pollution constitutes one of the largest environmental threats to public health worldwide, causing an estimated 4.2 million premature deaths per year.
