Coca-Cola, is in the soda-pop spotlight once again. This time, it’s related to a commitment they apparently made back in 2022, vowing that 25% of their drinks would be sold in reusable or refillable vessels by 2030. The company, previously judged as one of the globe’s top contributors to plastic pollution, appears to be doing a bit of a back-pedal.
The Popped Pledge:
Here’s the scoop: Right before the latest Global Plastics Summit, the Cola giant supposedly deleted the page on their website displaying the above promise. It seems that the company’s goal of reusable packaging has fizzed out. Instead, their packaging targets have shifted; the current objective is to “aim to use 35% to 40% recycled material in primary packaging.” Comparatively, the previous goal aspired to “use 50% recycled material in our packaging by 2030”.
Public Reactions:
Von Hernandez, the global coordinator of the campaign group Break Free from Plastic, labelled Coke’s latest move as a “masterclass in greenwashing”. Environmental advocates are challenging businesses, including Coca-Cola, to shift the focus from recycled plastic targets to reusable bottle targets. After all, single-use items, even recycled ones, usually end up as environmental junk.
The Cola conglomerate argues that they “care about the impact of every drink we sell and are committed to growing our business in the right way.” The question remains: will Coca-Cola recapture the fizz of their original pledge? We're all eager to see what happens.
