A Change of Pace at the EPA:
In an ambitious environmental move, President Trump has reportedly placed 168 employees at the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Environmental Justice on administrative leave. As part of his larger plan to eliminate certain government programs, the President has taken steps to do away with the office entirely. The Office in question is tasked with helping poverty-stricken and minority communities that disproportionately suffer from pollution.
Understanding the Plan:
According to an executive order signed by the President, all programs focusing on environmental justice, which cater to communities near industrial or heavily contaminated areas, shall be ceased. Molly Vaseliou, an E.P.A. spokeswoman, expressed her commitment to diligently implement President Trump’s executive orders. Keeping in line with the people’s mandate, the orders include ending what's seen as radical and wasteful Government D.E.I. (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) Programs and Preferencing.
Playing by the Rules:
The administrative leave regulations insist that no employee can be on leave for more than 10 days in a year. Hence, placing employees on leave is seen as the first step towards completely shutting down the office. Moreover, it seems that the remaining 100 or so environmental justice employees working in regional offices around the country may be next in line for this administrative leave. The cloud of fear looms over the organization, but only time will reveal what is in store for the fate of Environmental Justice.
