From Pipes to Profits: Line 5's Profitable Pipeline Deal Raises Environmental Concerns [SWOP NEWS]

A Sweet Deal Turns Sour:

Canadian oil titan Enbridge and US contractor Tim Barnard, known for his hefty contributions to Donald Trump's campaign, are facing acerbic criticism over the proposed replacement of the Line 5 pipeline. The Great Lakes' eco-sensitive area could be threatened by the highly-controversial plan, which was expedited under the Trump administration.

Pipeline Politics:

The ageing Line 5 pipeline runs through 4.4 miles of the Great Lakes, which are holding over 90% of the US, and 21% of the world's fresh water. The estimated $1.5bn replacement plan proposes a tunnel construction under the Lakes, a move critics believe poses a high environmental risk and doubts Barnard’s capability to execute, citing wage violation history and lack of relevant experience.

The Green-Blue Tangle:

While Trump administration glossed over the US Army Corps of Engineers' entire process of environmental review to propel the project, critics question the payout to oil industry donors like Barnard, who have pumped millions into Trump’s campaign and other Republican avenues. This pay-to-play backlash could not be overlooked and could potentially influence government contracting in the future.

Governor To The Rescue?

Opponents have appealed to Michigan's governor Gretchen Whitmer and her appointees on the Mackinac Straits Corridor Authority to highlight the quid pro quo allegations. The current pipeline transports around 540,000 barrels of oil and liquid natural gas daily, and potential disasters from anchor strikes or powerful currents could endanger the ageing pipeline.

Awaiting The Tunnel Vision:

Enbridge’s proposed utility tunnel below the Mackinac Straits floor faces obstacles due to its complexity, high pressure, and potential environmental risks. It's worth noting that the past seven years have witnessed strong political and legal opposition against the new pipeline proposal, and attempts are ongoing to decommission the existing pipeline. We wait to see how the story unfolds in its next chapter!
