For the Love of Plastic Straws:
U.S. President Donald Trump has a new way of sipping beverages, thanks to an executive order he recently signed favoring plastic drinking straws. Aiming to encourage the government and consumers alike, this directive upends effort by the previous administration to phase out single-use plastics. The President's pronounced gulp? Returning to plastic straws because paper straws, in his opinion, "don't work."
A Game of Sorts for Shakes and More:
President Trump is asking the U.S. government to bid farewell to paper straws in federal buildings and create a plan within 45 days to end their use nationwide. This move diverges from the road driven by President Joe Biden, who had proposed measures to minimize the consumption of non-biodegradable single-use plastics - potential pesky pollutants to our environment and food supplies.
Turning Back the Eco Clock:
The executive order forms part of a broader effort by President Trump weakening environmental commitments. He's also rolled back a past policy of ending the use of single-use plastic products on federal lands by 2032. Meanwhile, Green-leaning Canucks have declared certain types of single-use plastic as toxic, but these measures have been legally challenged by some heavyweights in the plastics industry.
A Global Endeavour with a Pinch of Resistance:
According to research by the OECD, the amount of plastic waste projected to be dumped into the environment by 2040 could balloon to 119 million tonnes, without new controls in place. Nonetheless, hopeful negotiations on a global treaty to regulate plastic pollution are due to restart this year. Yet, with the present U.S. administration's pro-oil and gas stance, there could be surprises ahead in the global discussion.
