Oil Industry Struts, Stumbles and Spurs Protest: CeraWeek in Houston: The world's largest conference for big oil, known as CeraWeek held in Houston, recently presented a potent mix of flamboyance and apprehension. Last year, the convention heavily emphasized sustainable practices. However, this year, following President Trump's re-election, fossil-fuel companies have shifted their focus to US energy dominance.
Sustainability Out, Dominance In: The event kicked off with the US energy secretary, Chris Wright declaring that the Trump administration was unwavering in its pursuit of increasing American energy production. Interior secretary, Doug Burgum, followed suit with calls to slash 20 to 30% of US regulations, while others echoed President Trump’s “drill, baby, drill” slogan.
Protests Mark Biggest Disruption in Conference History: The event wasn't without its critics. Hundreds of activists protested at the event, resulting in the largest disruption in the conference’s history. Eight arrests were made as environmental justice advocates took to the streets, claiming the energy industry under Trump warranted a protest of this magnitude.
An Undercurrent of Anxiety: Despite the confident exterior, signs of concern saturated the conference. Many participants noted that Trump’s tariff threats and the ensuing uncertainties could negatively impact fuel prices and the overall business environment. There were also fears that Trump’s push for increased oil and gas production could force prices down and limit profit.
The Climate Impact: One clear takeaway from CeraWeek: the US is far off track reducing fossil fuel production. Many are concerned this undermined attitude towards global warming will have dire consequences for the environment and public.
